I write you from Vancouver, Canada, with a
request for information.
I have lost track of a person who I believe
resides in the Vale of Glamorgan. His name is John Best. He and I are
great-grandsons of the captain and carpenter of the Swansea-built barque
"Caswell". In 1876, on its first voyage, there took place a
violent mutiny, in which the captain, first and second mates, and the
steward were murdered by Greek and Maltese crewmen. The surviving
British lived under fear of imminent death for over a month, until they
managed to retake the ship, killing two of the mutineers. Two other
mutineers were tried and executed in Cork.
I came in contact with Mr. Best shortly
after my father published a book on the mutiny in 1998. A new book by an
Irish criminologist, Seamus Breathnach, has been published, called
"The Riddle of the Caswell Mutiny" (Amazon) and I am most
interested to learn of Mr. Best's thoughts about it.
I would be most appreciative if you could
check your phone directory to see if he is listed in your area.
Thank you for your time. I hope you are
enjoying a busy tourist season, and I hope that one day I have the
chance to be a visitor. My father, Martin, was in the Canadian navy in
WWII, and his frigate was in Moelfre Bay in the days preceeding D-Day,
but he didn't have the chance to do much sight-seeing!
Yours truly,
Gary McGregor

My name is Peter John
Lewis and I recently traced my family history back to Llantwit Major.
My great, great, great grandfather, John Lewis, left there in the late
19th c. to find work as a stone mason in the flourishing coal mining
valley of Ogmore Vale. I am certain that branches of my family
still live in or around Llanilltud Fawr. Can anyone help me
trace them.
Yours sincerely,
Peter John Lewis.

I do not know if you will be able to help me, but I am trying to find out some information about somebody who used to live in Llantwit Major, and as your website is very informative I thought that you might either have a reference to him amongst your records, or be able to point me in the direction of somebody who would have some further information. His name is David Hunt, and through another website I have got the impression that he died towards the end of last year, but I am trying to find confirmation of this, a date of death, and, if possible, confirmation of the name and address of his widow. If there is anything you can do to help I would be most grateful. My reason for asking is he was a student at St John's College, Cambridge, and we endeavour to keep track of our alumni wherever possible. Mr Hunt was in touch with me last year, and I was sorry to read that he had passed away, and would like to write to his widow, but presumably as some mail has been returned to us she is no longer living at the same address. Thank you very much for your help. Yours faithfully Fiona Colbert (Mrs) |
